William Binney House
A Victorian East Side residence built in 1860, this building has undergone many changes over its history. Initially a single-family house, the entire building was later used as a school for over one-hundred pupils. Architect Steven L. Lerner restored the house in 1972 and converted it into six apartments. In 1992, Lerner redesigned and united two third-floor apartments into one single unit. The renovation transformed small rooms and cramped circulation spaces into light, airy rooms that flow into one another, while still maintaining the figure of the rooms. From the entry hall, one enters into a parlor which doubles as a dining room. The parlor opens into the expansive living room, which at the back contains a small library that overlooks downtown Providence. The other wing of the apartment contains the kitchen and bedrooms. Conscious of the history of the building, Lerner retained period mantels, flooring, and other details throughout the apartment. The intention was not to replicate a Victorian interior, but rather to fashion a comfortable living environment incorporating old with the new.
