Design documents complete for LGBTQ Center
September 10, 2013 - Design documents are complete and bid requests are out for the new LGBTQ Center at URI.
The newly designed LGBTQ Center is a charming residential-style building located on a 1/2 acre parcel on Upper College Road in Kingston, RI – the gateway road to the main campus of URI. The project includes the demolition of the 4,000 GSF Ruggles House and the reconstruction of a two-story structure made up of approximately 5,000 sf. The exterior is equipped with facades of wood and stone, pitched and flat rooftops, and is completed with a spacious porch-covered terrace. The natural landscape of the Center is further complimented by the attractive landscape design by Birchwood Design Group who also includes parking in the site development. The interior space of the LGBTQ Center includes multi-purpose rooms for meetings, a student lounge and resource area suitable for events, a sizable kitchen, and office space for administrators and staff. The construction costs are estimated at $1,200,000 and a plan for completion is set for 2015.
The new LGBTQ Center at the University of Rhode Island is an integral part of URI’s enduring commitment to education, personal identity development, and diversity. The Center is a cultural department aimed at providing education, engagement, and support to the campus community through necessary programs and services. The LGBTQ Center will implement informative discussions and support programs that address concepts, issues, and concerns directly related to topics of sexual and gender identity. The LGBTQ Center will also provide a safe and welcoming environment for all members of the URI community to engage in a positive and forward-thinking way that supports individuality, unity, and equality. One primary goal of the Center is that implementing programs such as this will improve the experiences and lives of the LGBTQ community and members of the larger campus community by offering people the opportunity to meet and create meaningful relationships with each other.
